Of our 186 TLA graduates throughout the history of the school, 166 entered universities and colleges directly following graduation. 132 of our graduates were awarded honours status by the Ministry of Education, 19 of our graduates entered some form of trades or vocational school and six have entered/graduated from medical schools locally and around the world. One TLA graduate has a PhD in Chemistry from UBC. Two have entered religious life.
It is commonplace for our TLA graduates to receive scholarships for post secondary studies. Two of our graduates were awarded the $25,000.00 Gordon Schrum Scholarship from SFU. One graduate received the BCIT President’s Entrance Scholarship, another received a $20,000.00 scholarship from the University of Western Ontario. One scholarship of $8,000.00 was received from the BCIT Marine Engineering Program. A TLA graduate received a UBC Engineering Scholarship of $5,000.00. One of our graduates was awarded a full, four-year scholarship to the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario. Other scholarships received by TLA graduates include a $6,000.00 Leadership Scholarship from Catholic Pacific College, an SFU Engineering scholarship of $4,500.00, and a TWU Applied Mathematics and Computing Science Scholarship of $3,000.00.
Ross Labrie, UBC English Professor, emeritus, has reviewed many TLA high school student essays over the years, said with reference to our students writing capabilities: “ . . . Not only does the majority of first year university students not know how to write an essay, they are incapable of putting a coherent paragraph together, and many cannot construct a sentence. Your TLA students not only write good essays, but they do so eloquently.”
