PARENT MEETING WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 5, 7:00 PM

A brief Parent Participation Program meeting is scheduled for tomorrow evening, which
will be followed by an important talk by Dr. Marcel Hediger, who brings pressing updates
to our school community about the serious threat of today’s illegal drugs and how they
affect our youth and the general public. All parents are urged to attend.

CHARITABLE WORK FROM WALK-A-THON PROCEEDS

We are pleased to donate ten percent of our proceeds from this year’s Walk-A-Thon to a parish in
Ecuador which suffered damage from the devastating earthquake last year. Fund raising efforts from
last year’s Pro Life Month have also been dedicated to that worthy cause. The parish is that of San
Francisco de Asis, in Cojimies, Manabi, Ecuador, and we have been in direct contact with the parish
priest who has outlined the repairs necessary to the church. Families and individuals who wish to
contribute directly to this cause should contact the office.

GRADE 8 & 12 KAYAK TRIP A HIT

Students and teachers took to the ocean waves on Friday for the annual Kayak Leadership trip from
Belcarra Picnic Area to Twin Islands in Canada’s southernmost fjord, Indian Arm. Weather cooperated
to allow one of the best trips so far. Students learned basic kayak skills as well as facts about the local
glacial formations, wildlife, First Nations Settlements and petroglyphs, and even about the mythical
monster that dwells beneath the waves. Rocky Point Kayak Instructors and Guides declared they have
found a new favourite group!

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7: PROFESSIONAL DAY

Teachers will be studying aspects of the new curriculum under the guidance of an expert in the area.
School is not in session for that day.

ABSENTEE PROCEDURE

Parents of students who are to be absent for whatever reason, are required to contact the office to
advise us that their children will be away from school. You are encouraged to leave a message on the
school’s answering system which is available 24/7.

BIKES AT SCHOOL

Students are welcome to cycle to school, and may lock their bikes to the chainlink fence at the Cul-de-
Sac entrance on the west side of the school property. This area is visible to all and the safest place to
secure bikes.

BOTTLE DRIVE FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14

Bring your recyclables to school at the end of next week to support this popular fund-raiser for TLA.

CALENDAR UPDATES

Please note that the upcoming RC Challenge locations have been switched: the October 22nd event will
be held at St. Catherine’s in Langley, and the November 19th event will be at TLA. The practice
schedule has been set and sent home to parents.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL

We wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving holiday and look forward to seeing you back to school on
Tuesday, October 11.

WALK-A-THON INSTRUCTIONS:

A hearty thank you to TLA Walk-A-Thon coordinator, Mrs. Vicki Guzikowski, and to the parents who
have volunteered to help with this annual major fund raiser! Students will begin walking from the school
to Mackin Park (1100 Brunette Avenue) this Thursday at 9:00 AM. Parents may walk down with the
primary (K – 3) students if they wish. Please ensure that the following points are noted:

  1. Students must come to school in their gym strip, ready to walk. No school uniforms!
  2. Students should dress for the weather. It is forecast to reach 13C on Thursday, with a 60%
    chance of rain!
  3. Gatorade & Hot Chocolate will be served. Students should bring water bottles, labelled with
    names.
  4. Students should pack an extra snack to be consumed on the walk.
  5. Students will be dismissed from Mackin park at 12:00 Noon.
  6. Students will carry cards which will be marked to indicate how many kilometres are
completed. These cards will serve as proof of completion of the Walk-A-Thon as students collect any
outstanding pledges. All funds must be turned to the school on Monday, October 17. Pledge money
must be brought to the school in the form of cheques: one from the family for any cash collected, and
any others from individual donors, accompanied by all pledge form(s). Sorry, NO CASH WILL BE
ACCEPTED. (This avoids the danger of any loss and saves a tremendous amount of time in the office.)
  7. There is still time to get more pledges! Pledges may be collected up until the October 17 return
date. For the purposes of student awards for pledges, totals will be calculated on the amounts
submitted that day. Students who do not submit their totals by the October 17 deadline will still
receive the number of raffle tickets corresponding to their final submitted total.
  8. The Walk-a-Thon Prize Assembly will be scheduled in late October/Early November.
